Speaker:   Chuck Watson spoke about polio.  Back when, there were about 350,000 cases per year and last year there were just 359 in four countries combined.  What a great showing for the eradication of polio-process!  Worldwide, there are 51 cases today:  Afghanistan (38) and Pakistan (13).  There are three strains of polio:  Type 2 was eradicated in 1999, as was Type 3 shortly thereafter.  Type 1 accounts for the 51 cases today.  The four major organizations responsible for contributing money for the eradication of polio are: WHO (World Health Organization, CDC (Center for Disease Control), Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Rotary International.  Although Rotary is thought to have donated more, The Gates Foundation has donated some $350 million thus far.  A very impressive and fine talk was given by Chuck and especially that Chuck was asked to speak at a moment’s notice to fill in.

50/50  $105 went to Al Campanella….who didn’t pick the joker!!!  Now, only TWO cards left.

Meeting ended at 1:22 PM

The word, Ought, can be pronounced in eight different ways.  The following sentence contains them all:  A tough, dough-faced ploughman strode through the streets of Scarborough, coughing and hiccoughing thoughtfully.

Speaker:  Tony Caputo, a new reporter for News 12, New Jersey, who won 2 Emmys for excellent broadcasting, and who was good enough to bring one to us to see.  He didn’t go to college and still made it in the broadcasting arena as a successful broadcaster, who has been with News 12 for 15 years and loves his work.  He didn’t mention but the late Peter Jennings also never went to college and from was also a successful newscaster.  Caputo gets up at 2:00 AM every day to begin his workday and does “live reporting”.  He said he finds reporting exciting but often unstable in that things are constantly changing and never knows what is next.  He noted that today one must have a bachelor’s degree in order to get an internship in broadcasting.   Tony captured everybody’s attention as I looked around our audience, and this author thought that he is an excellent speaker, having wonderful recall and references, and personality with lots of charisma.

50/50  $110.00 went to Frank.  Congrats, Frank.  However, still no cigar with 3 cards left.
