Speaker:

Richard Chrampanis – of Jersey Sports Zone, spoke to us about his interest in sports announcing.  He grew up in Middletown and always wanted to be a sportscaster.  He mentioned that New York is the #1 sports market, but he was assigned to a small town in Iowa, Bangor, Maine, and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.  Two of his mentors were Warner Wolf and Bruce Beck.  The former is on the Imus morning show; the latter doing sports casting with NBC for the last 18 years, and is it’s major sports anchor.  Rich left Myrtle Beach last year to come back to Middletown and post on his new website, which has had over 1 million hits in the past year.  His website-based business is different since he uses high-def video and audio.  His website is www.shoresportszone.com.   Rich noted that he was one of the people [for the last 15 years] who votes for who gets the Heismann trophy.

Speaker:  John Drucker, Assistant Construction Official, Fire Protection Subcode Official, and Building/Fire/Electrical Inspector for the Borough of Red Bank, NJ, Red Bank for the past 13 years and prior to that he was a project manager at the World Trade Center in NYC.  John spoke to us about the fire code and fire prevention.  John is extremely knowledgeable and very familiar with fire codes and prevention, who being through his strong background, has most likely prevented many fires in the greater Red Bank area through his inspections and guidance.  He spoke to us for over 40 minutes and then took many questions.  Our entire group was very well focused and appeared extremely interested in this talk.

Some points John mentioned which were of exceptional importance:
  1. Fires can shut a town down; therefore, fire safety is very important.
  2. Loss of property affects tenants and entire towns.
  3. Fire prevention is a very serious business and review take place prior to and after accidents.  Building codes are carefully reviewed often.
  4. New Jersey is currently reviewing all building codes, and the architects and engineers are a very important component to the proper modification code revision.
  5. The new thinking is to do work first (in an emergency) and then file for permits within 3 days after.  Inspections will occur within 30 days of filing for permits.
  6. Shortly, people will be able to apply for permits online.
  7. In the USA, approximately 2800 lives are lost due to house fires, thanks to smoke detectors (many more losses occurred prior to smoke detector use).
  8. New Jersey wants sprinklers to be installed in new housing as part of the plumbing system, which can’t be done after a house is built.  Approx. cost is $2.00 per square foot.
  9. John asked that if you have any questions regarding fire safety to feel free to call him at 732-904-6823.

Speaker
Today is Career Day, from 8:00 AM-1:30 PM, starting at Red Bank Regional high school, and then moving to the NCC for lunch at noon.

Eagh Holden, an alumni of RBR, and a financial advisor with Smith Barney, a world-class basketball player, coach, gave an inspirational talk to the student about not forgetting that you can do sports in high school and college, but must also take care of your studies, as he did at the University of Maryland.  He was a fine speaker who had all student captivated when he spoke.  This was a valuable talk and hopefully all of the students got something beneficial from the talk.

Speaker:  Bill Donnelly spoke about the Satellite club.  These are member of our club that allows alternative time to meet and is [also] for fellowship and service.  Satellite club and Regular club members can attend either meeting, and they will pay RI and district dues.  They will have their own administrative structure.  We must insure the tradition is maintained of both clubs.  Satellite club will have at least six hands-on projects per year and support fund-raising of the Regular club.

Harriet then did an eloquent job of inducting the new members.  She introduced them and asked them and their sponsors to come to the podium where she gave a brief history of Paul Harris’s vision.  It was noted that our club was chartered in 1921 and has given away to date in excess of $1 million.  She asked them if they agree to accept the club’s rules and by-laws and all assented.  Each sponsor pinned his inductee and applause was greatly heard.  She ended by asking all of us to make all new members feel welcome.

Horton thanked the new members and noted that this was the first time ever that 6 new members were inducted at the same time.  He introduced Dave Forward, who will be our new DG (in July), who spoke eloquently.  He has written several books on Rotary and spoke about being a Rotarian.  Dave noted a very touching experience he had in India when he was asked to inoculate a newborn with 2 drops of the polio vaccine, which was a very touching and compelling story about how great Rotary truly is.  Dave suggested that new members see what they can do for Rotary and the community, and merely not just write checks.  He asked everybody to give back and make the world a better place.

Speaker:  Ted Friedli, DonnaLyn Giegerich, Kick Cancer Overboard. Ted is a member of the Long Branch Rotary Club.  The mission of KCO is to send cancer survivors and patients on a trip consisting of a free, 5-day cruise to Bermuda on the Royal Caribbean cruise lines, which leaves from Port Liberty, New Jersey. A cruise for two cost $2,500 and for 3 or 4 is approximately $3,000-$3,500, which includes a balcony room, gratuities, parking (or transportation to the port), and passports, if needed.  The New Jersey Marathon is a funding sponsor.  100% of any donation goes directly to the recipients, and Ted noted that there is no labor or overhead in the process, as with other charities.  Ted would like individuals and businesses to donate [money for] the cruises. Ted said it would be lovely for celebrities to also be part of the cruises.

Kick Cancer Overboard recently became a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, so your donations are tax-deductible to the extent of the law.
