Jim-Frank, remember the days from Hennessy's Gold Coast, in Sea Bright?

Glenn LeBoeuf usually talks to us about Abraham Lincoln, in a change of tack, he spoke about George Washington. General Washington lost 9 out of 12 battles he fought, he retreated well. He had charisma. He took command of approximately19,000 hungry untrained farmers, including blacks. His army was made up of militias and his officers were not well trained. Glenn talked about the armies and the difficulties they encountered, how Washington decided on a secret night mission and a northeaster hits. What happened when Washington sent an advance team to scout. Glenn explained that on Christmas Eve the British were drinking and how they crossed the river and captured the Hessians. General Cornwallis was the head of the British troops and a lush.  Washington was able to inspire his troops and they followed him into battle. He lead by example and courage. Glen always gives an interesting view of history.

As Horton would say, “people attendance was very low today, it does not make our club look good when we have speakers”.

50/50

Oh Boy, we are in for it next year.  The Prez Jr. ran the meeting and all I can tell you is that he didn’t get a lot out of PETs training.  On the bright side, there is no way for him to go but up.

We sang, “My Country Tiz”, pledged, Bill offered thanks, and we 4-Wayed.

I was very pleased with lunch which consisted of a mini iceberg wedge with green goddess dressing, sliced London broil and a brownie sundae.  The red haired “Goddess” sitting next to me thought that there was way too much strange green stuff on the salad, but I didn’t hear any other negative comments.

Good old Sgt. Jim was at it again.  Late was Jon, Jay, Rob, Frank, and Chuck.  Harriet was without her pin, but “Praise Be” Tony had a pin on.  Jim fined him anyway.  Darren got fined for some absurd reason, and so did I.

Birthdays for the month included Chuck, Steve and yours truly.  I was the youngest of the three.

Happy $$$ included Addie, Bill, Harriet and me for the great District Conference.  Chuck gave for the fact that Mother’s Day is coming up, and he is taking his grandkids camping.  Frank gave a sad dollar for his handicap doubling since he was a teenager.  Frank, that was sixty years ago, what do you expect.  Darren gave a sad dollar because Ken’s cousin passed away.  I gave a lot of money because the next time you will see me at a Rotary Function will be at the Golf Outing.  You can imagine that brought a great deal of weeping and gnashing of teeth from the rest of the group.

The District Leadership Assembly is on June 24th at Brookdale Community College.  A number of Rotarians are going and hopefully Darren won’t miss it.  Jackson’s Golf Outing honoring Mike Gormley is on Aug. 14th, our picnic is on Aug.18th and our Golf Outing is on August 21st.  Addie wanted to remind us that we need restaurant gift certificates, and she needs wine and gifts for her baskets.  With Addie, you always wonder if all of the wine gets into the baskets.

The program speaker was Don Matts from Ladacin.  Ladacin stands for Lifetime Assistance for Disabled people, and I didn’t copy the slide fast enough to tell you what the other letters stand for.  It works with disabled people of all ages to give them every opportunity to improve their lives.  They work on basic and specific needs of their clients such as therapy and education.  It serves over 3,500 individuals and has a full and part time staff of 550 people.  Over half of their funding comes from state agencies.  It was interesting in that one of their clients was trained to do scanning, and is now working at Jon and Jay’s dealership.  Thanks guys for giving back..

Hey, Hey, Hey, folks, guess who won the 50-50 for the second time in a row.  You guessed it, little old me.  I took home $20 and the ten of hearts.

Well, people, I am going to turn over the COGS writing to the capable hands of Barbara Mullins.  You know what, she could use a hand doing this.  Pitch in, it isn’t hard to do.

See you all in August.  TTFN
COGS May 4 2017
It was a sad and somber meeting as we remembered fondly our friend and fellow Rotarian, Warren Tockerman. Mike, Joe, Rob, Jon, Addie, Tony, Ken, Ted Friedli, and Denise all gave sad dollars for his passing.  I chose to remember the happy occasion last year, when the club awarded Warren his Paul Harris.  He was so pleased.  Rest in peace, Warren, you served this club well.

The menu for the day was a summer salad, grilled and sliced pork flat iron steak, and tiramisu.  The pork was excellent, but I am not a fan of tiramisu.  Rest assured that I ate it, but I am not a big fan of it.

The Prez wanted to remind us that the service for our veterans for the Memorial Day celebration will be held on May 29th.  He is looking for people to attend and represent Red Bank Rotary.  Ken indicated that he will try to be there and Addie said she would be there.  Jack is a regular at the event.

Ted Friedli was at the meeting to promote his charity, Kick Cancer Overboard.  He indicated that he has a free trip for a deserving person.  The Prez immediately volunteered, but then found out that you needed to have or have had cancer. Ken didn’t think it was worth going that far to get a free trip, and withdrew his offer to go.

Big Sgt. Jim was at it again with his fines.  You won’t believe this, but Tony got fined for not wearing a pin.  I think it was the first time this week he was fined for that. I believe that Eric was also fined for going pinless, and Jon, Joe, Mike and Rob were late.  Robin was fined for having her picture in the paper with her “new husband”, Bill Moss, and Ken and I were fined for some ridiculous and unwarranted reasons.

June 10th through the 14th is the RI Convention in Atlanta.  We have a good crew going and I don’t think it is too late to sign up.  August 18th is the picnic at the track and August 21st is our golf outing.  By the way, the raffle tickets are being printed as we speak, so we can get a jump on selling them.  The Jackson Rotary is having their golf the week before ours on August 14th in memory of Mike Gormley.  Some of us will be going to that, and there is room for more.  E-mail Ken or me for more information.  After a number of changes, the “Bored” Meeting will be held at 10:00AM on May 18, at Navesink CC.  One other item, the District Leadership Training Assembly will be held at Brookdale Community College on May 20th.  Boy, can our upcoming leaders use that session.  Ken, it’s probably too late for you.

Our speaker for the meeting was Vin Gopal, formally the County Democratic Chairman and currently running for the State Senate.  The main platform he is running on is that we have 565 municipalities in the state of NJ and the cost is driving up our property taxes. Consolidate the towns, and the taxes will go down. This is a long-standing issue that has been talked about for many years, but because of the provincial mind set of the state’s residents, nothing is ever done about it. The program did stimulate many questions of Vin and many people voiced an opinion on the subject.  It was interesting to note that one or two of the opinions voiced were even intelligent.

Hey, guess who won the 50-50.  Right, yours truly took home $25 and the four of clubs.  Lou had the nerve to say to me that the pot wasn’t big enough for him to win.  TTFN.
